UC San Diego Connect announces most innovative new product (MIP) award finalists

San Diego Technology and Life Science Companies Continue to Demonstrate Creative Applications and Product Development

SAN DIEGO (October 16, 2003) — UCSD CONNECT announces the finalists for the 16th annual CONNECT Most Innovative New Product (MIP) Awards, reinforcing the region’s reputation as a business climate that supports emerging technologies and encourages creative product development.

Products highlighted by this year’s cadre of nominees ranged from computer security innovations and improvements for accessing WI-FI to the first diagnostic test to detect West Nile Virus in human blood. The 19 finalists were selected from almost 100 entries from a range of companies.

The mission of the MIP Award is to honor top new products.  In addition, in recognition of the length of development and regulatory time that it takes for drug treatments, gene therapy and vaccines to come to market, for the second year, the Biotechnology Research and Development category reviews life science products in the R&D phase.

The finalists were honored last night at a reception held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla.  Winners will be announced at the CONNECT MIP Awards Luncheon to be held Wednesday, December 10th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sheraton Harbor Island hotel.

“After 16 years, the MIP competition continues to be a viable testimony to the strength and importance of future technologies and the impact on the San Diego region.  Despite a challenging economic environment, San Diego based companies continue to be on the forefront of innovation,” said Greg Horowitt, acting director of CONNECT.

Since 1988, the CONNECT MIP Awards program has served as a benchmark for predicting the region’s most successful emerging technologies.  From early stage biotechnology companies to the first products generated by the region’s telecommunications boom, the awards program has been an indicator of the industries and technologies that have fueled the San Diego economy.

The 2003 MIP Award finalists are:

General Technology:

  • Palomar Technologies --  the Palomar Technologies Model 6500 Precision Eutectic Die Bonder --  an automated assembly machine that precisely picks, places, and attaches tiny and fragile electronic and photonic components and assembles complex devices such as telecom source lasers, RF- MEMS switches, and high performance consumer products.
  • Sempra Fiber Links -- Fiber-In-Gas (FIG) technology --  a revolutionary, environmentally friendly process to install fiber-optic cable in existing natural gas pipeline that avoids costly trenching and other more intrusive conventional methods involved with installing fiber-optic telecommunications networks in urban areas.
  • Oluma, Inc. -- Pressure Sensor System (Model PTS-15)-- incorporates patented, innovative optical fiber sensors specifically designed for accurately monitoring pressure and temperature in extreme environments such as downhole oil wells.

Hardware:

  • Tarari, Inc. -- Tarari Anti-Virus Content Processor -- scans for viruses at wire speed and accelerates the complex algorithms used by leading Anti-Virus applications to significantly increase performance and provide high data throughput, thereby effectively eliminating the performance penalty traditionally associated with protecting data in networks and on servers.
  • Wellspring International -- Wellspring Wireless Utility Services  -- The only complete water, gas, electric and energy metering sub-utility and utility expense recovery systems combine wireless metering technology and read-bill-collect services with the finest resident care.
  • SAIC -- RTR® (Real Time Radiography) Portable Digital X-Ray Inspection System  -- a fully digital x-ray system designed to investigate suspicious packages for the presence of explosive devices or contraband, and evaluate unexploded ordnance for fusing configurations.

Software:

  • CineForm -- Aspect HD™ -- a software high-definition digital video “engine” that allows professionals in the event videography, television, and film post-production businesses to edit high-definition digital video in “real time” on a standard PC.
  • ChemNavigator, Inc.  -- 3-DPL Map --  a new software technology for drug discovery that rapidly identifies samples contained within any chemical library that are likely to interact with a drug target by simulating the interactions between each chemical sample and the surface of the drug target.
  • Genomatica, Inc.  SimPheny(TM) --  a modeling and simulation software platform to support the development of metabolic models and their simulation using a constraints-based approach that enables the construction of predictive genome-scale cellular models.
  • Preventsys, Inc -- a Network Audit and Policy Assurance System --  designed to automatically and frequently audit network security with regard to codified enterprise security policies, allowing the organization to "close the books" on security on a regular basis.

Telecommunications:

  • Ensemble Communications --  Fixed Wireless Metro Ethernet -- enables operators to extend metro Ethernet and voice, video and data solutions beyond the fiber footprint to provide businesses with cost-effective, high speed services.
  • Hughes Network Systems -- DIRECWAY Wi-Fi Access -- the industry's first satellite-based solution for Wi-Fi Hot Spots that is initially targeted at RV parks, campgrounds and marinas and delivered through WISPs (wireless Internet Service Providers).
  • Zyray Wireless -- SPINNERchip -- an add-on WCDMA baseband processor that enables cellular handset manufacturers to upgrade existing GSM/GPRS solutions with WCDMA capability in a low cost and low risk manner.

Life Science:

  • INNERCOOL therapies -- The Celsius Control™ System-- an endovascular approach to the use of mild hypothermia (32-34°C) in the setting of ischemic injury.
  • Prometheus Laboratories --  Hypolactasia Variant -- the first diagnostic genetic test to help physicians determine if a patient's intolerance to lactose is genetic or symptomatic of a more serious disorder.
  • GenVault Corp. --  DNA Storage and Extraction Plate --  an extremely rapid and cost-effective technology platform to store, retrieve, extract and ship DNA samples in the dry state at room temperature without use of cryogenic systems (freezers, liquid nitrogen tanks, ice packs, etc.) or requirement of special biohazard treatment to handle blood samples for subsequent DNA analysis.

Biotechnology R&D:

  • CancerVax Corp -- Canvaxin -- is a therapeutic cancer vaccine currently being studied in two Phase 3 clinical trials for the treatment of advanced-stage melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
  • Gen-Probe, Inc. -- Procleix WNV Assay -- a West Nile virus (WNV) assay system that can detect the presence of West Nile virus in freshly donated human blood.
  • Maxim Pharmaceuticals -- Ceplene -- a breakthrough, first-in-class drug which is based on the naturally occurring molecule histamine, with potential to change the practice of medicine in treatments using the immune system to fight diseases such as cancer and liver disease, including Hepatitis.
